GIF is a 30-year-old format with a 256-colour palette and no compression between frames, which is why naive converters produce huge, grainy files. TokDown runs a two-pass ffmpeg pipeline in your browser: the first pass analyses your clip and builds a custom palette, the second pass maps every frame to it with ordered dithering. The result keeps text readable and gradients smooth at a fraction of the size.
You control the three things that decide file size: the clip length (up to 15 seconds), the frame rate (10 to 24 fps) and the width (240 to 800 pixels). For chat apps, 480 px at 15 fps is a good default; for documentation or a README, 640 px at 12 fps looks crisp and stays small. Because everything runs locally, you can iterate as many times as you like without uploading anything.

Small details that most converters skip.
Optimised palette
A two-pass palette per clip keeps colours clean instead of banded and noisy.
Sharp scaling
Lanczos resampling keeps text and edges crisp at small sizes.
You control size
Width from 240 to 800 px and 10 to 24 fps, so you can hit any upload limit.
Private by design
The conversion runs in your browser with ffmpeg; the video never leaves your device.
